Recording the colour change of a traffic light through video

Research photography revolved around the artificial bright lights of the city at night.

An array of beautiful neon colours were captured out of focus. The lights - shapes and colours are so intense they begin to abstract reality.

Sections of interest were honed in on and recreated through the use of oil paint.

The glow, haze and luminosity of the source photography was mimicked using alternative materials. Aluminium was filed and etched into testing its surface and reflective qualities. Enamel paints were trialed on top, settling with no brush marks and maintaining a fluid, glossy and vibrant quality when dry.

The roundel format followed through from the soft focus photography and continued experimentation with enamels observing their fluidity, formations and colour.

Enamel paints were worked onto plastic and gloss surfaces. Liquid and aerosol enamels were mixed with oils and emulsion paint to investigate the properties of the paint and their reactions.
