Year 3 Fine Art Paint
Self Directed Practice based on the City
Three blocks of Studio practice were integrated with two blocks of teaching practice during the Third year of study.
The first body of work was drawn from the Postcard Project completed upon entry into Third year. Sections of the postcards were cropped, enlarged and re-worked through painting using specified colour palettes.
The second project was based on an in situ visit to the Grand Canal Dock area of Dublin's City Centre. Abstract paintings were created from a 3D sculptural piece made in studio which mimicked the red poles situated at the Docks.
The final project of Year 3 was Self-Directed. Source photographs were edited to focus on the outline shape of buildings, the sky being highly saturated to begin with due to direct sunlight during daylight hours. These were then translated into basic silhouette shapes. Colour and tonality became a driving force behind the work - the use of emulsion painted paper cut-outs contributed to the colour blocking and vibrancy of the pieces.
